Howdy all! Hope everyone had a lovely weekend. My Instragram feed tells me spring has finally sprung back in the States, so I trust everyone is in good spirits. Michael and I had a wonderfully relaxing weekend at home here in Singapore. Michael had been working in HK for most of the week, so once he returned we took advantage of our lack of plans and laid low.
The highlight of the weekend for me was a photography walk through the old Arab Quarter of the city, which was organized by Baobab Photo. The instructor, Karen, frequently hosts various photo walks and I certainly plan to take advantage of future events. The outing was a welcome opportunity to explore a beautiful and unique area, meet some interesting locals and practice portrait photography with other keen photographers. This was also a welcome break for Michael since he is my go-to muse and I am excessively partial to how good he looks ;)
Arab Street, or the Arab Quarter, is a refreshing pocket of old-world Singapore. Outside of the historic Sultan Mosque (which was unfortunately under wraps), is a dandy little selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. The neighborhood is best described as a vibrant hodgepodge of Muslim, Malay and Singaporean people and culture. Arab Street, combined with the boutiques of neighboring Haji Lane, is definitely a must stop for visitors, or a fun way to spend a Saturday for locals alike. The area also comes alive at night when many cafes set up small outdoor tables and shisah. Shisha (hookah) was a major night life draw to the area, but I read it has recently been banned in Singapore. That's a shame as it really added a lot of character and authenticity to the area and I can only imagine how the local business owners are coping with the change. Either way - it's certainly a fun area to spend the weekend.
In addition to snapping photos, we practiced the delicate art of asking people permission to take their picture. People are surprisingly willing to open up if you simply explain your reasoning (plus a bit of flattery doesn't hurt!). Behold, the power of the camera.
Near the mosque, the first group of people we met were a lovely group of ladies from Soul Sisters SG. Exercising charity, (one of the 5 pillars of Islam), these ladies were spending the day traveling to various mosques around Singapore cleaning up and giving donated items as part of their 'Spread The Love' event. We are in the process of gathering photos to send to the group for their initiative and pleasure. When taking strangers' portraits, it's best practice to request the person's information and either email or print them a copy of the photo. The gesture goes a long way for the recipent and helps to fill the pond of photography karma.
The ladies were even kind enough to do some 'modeling' for us.
Breaking down the fourth wall... The amount of people that stopped because they thought we were paparazzi and the gals were celebrities was more than worth it for everyone involved.
See me? I'm the one with the poor form. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This little cutie was definitely the star of the show. It was like North West at LAX. She was at that perfect age where you are awestruck by how a functioning human can be that teeny.

Turning the corner from Muscat Street onto the main Arab Street drag, we bounced between the numerous textile and rug shops - Arab Street's hallmark.
Gim Joo Textile Company | 90 Arab Street
Rishi Handicrafts | 58 Arab Street
Samad & Sons Carpet | 78 Arab Street
"Wait, let me hold this up first."
"Take a photo of my brother - he's better looking."
This gentlemen was from Indonesia and had the bluest eyes I have even seen. He knows he's totally workin' it too. :)
We met this young gentleman who worked just around the corner at the Malay Heritage Centre. He was promoting the Food Trail tours as part of the Singapore Heritage Fest.
"This traditional dress costs half a month's salary!"
That's all folks. Thanks for sharing in my photography adventures. It's a slight copout since I still do not have an iPhone with a working back camera. The only other weekend recap photo I had, that wasn't on my Cannon, was a selfie of me eating a McDonald's vanilla cone. New phone is on the to-do list.
It's a short work week here in Singapore so Michael and I will be heading our separate ways on Thursday night for respective guys and gals getaways. Can't wait!
Until next time.
XO,
CD
