Pulau Sibu, Johor, Malaysia

Hey friends!

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter - from the looks of it on social media everyone was well dressed, well fed and time was well spent with families. Not going to lie, I was feeling a little blue on Monday looking at ya'll.

Anyway, here is how Michael and I spent our long Easter weekend. But Cassi, you ask, how can you possibly feel anything but awesome when you spent your weekend at an awesome looking beach?! It's possible my friends and family, that's just how much we love and miss you :)
Side note: did anyone else have like 8 engagements on their newsfeed this weekend? Is Easter the new Christmas proposal? Congrats to all the happy couples.

Okay, the good stuff. We spent 3 days and 3 nights at this resort / dive base on a tiny island in Malaysia. (as I am typing this Michael just leaned over my shoulder saying how we NEED to learn how to dive. In due time - I still don't like to swim out far enough that I cant touch the bottom for fear of getting eaten by some mysterious sea monster - a real fear in SE Asia!) Anyway, the island was very 'back to the basics.' We stayed in this little amazing beach chalet right on the water. Like I am talking about the slightest sneeze of a tsunami and we'd be so dead. We somehow got the best chalet closest to the water. The beach huts like the one we stayed in all had a little wrap around deck, a single bed and small bathroom (no aircon, no hot water, no cell or internet, no chance of not being continually covered in sand). We slept under a large mosquito net with the windows and doors open to the open ocean - it was magical - spiritual almost! The huts around the island don't even have keys or locks. You check your valuables at the front desk and just chit your way to beach bliss the rest of the weekend.

We got in late on Thursday night, but here is the Friday morning boat ready to join the fun. The journey from Singapore by car (a van from the resort) was about 3 hours. From the jetty to our island was about 20 min - a little nerve racking in the moon light, but it was really neat looking back. Beach to room to bar in lickity-split!

Our chalet. Lucky number V0.

Tiny little A-frame huts.

This is us dying laughing at the slightly inappropriate and for whatever reason extra loud sound of a beer cracking open. Hey! It's always 5:00 somewhere when you're on island time :)

Part of the beach bar and activities headquarters.

Friday night we signed up for the sunset beach cruise. It was by far our favorite part of the trip. We took a short boat ride over to this teeny-tiny white sand beach to build a fire and watch the sun set. We were with a few other couples, young and old, best friends and happy families. It was a really special evening.

My favorite pic from the trip ^^

I snagged a few pieces of the most perfect white coral for some new home decor.

This darling couple has been coming to Sea Gypsy for many, many years. They were celebrating her birthday and they were the absolute cutest couple I had ever seen in my life.

Most of the weekend was spent bouncing between our deck chairs, the water and the bar reading, relaxing and enjoying each others presence (because we don't spend enough time together we joked ;))

Taking a break from all that nothingness, we decided to sign up for a jungle hike.

A quick boat, 30 min of legit hiking (in sandals, oops) and a whole lot of oily tropical sweating later, we made it to this little fresh water pond. They say the waterfall is usually a legit waterfall, but today it was just a trickle.

The water was deep enough for a few cannon balls for those who dared.

Sadly, there are more than a few abandoned resorts in the area. 2 on our island and 1 where we went on our hike. There was also an abandoned and run down sea turtle sanctuary - all the turtles were stolen by poachers a few years ago :( (my initial thought was, are poachers a slightly nicer word for pirates?!) We were told a lot of the resorts are owned by foreigners living far away who do a poor job of managing their local staff or their own finances for that matter. The place goes bankrupt and it's just abandoned to rot - pretty sad. Not to mention, no one is responsible for cleaning up the beach in that area which seemed to collect a shocking amount of trash - save the Earth people!

Omg is that one of those cool, expensive resorts on stilts?! Nope, we were told this is just the Sultan of Johor's private holiday fishing village. I am not sure if the rumor is true.

The restaurant. Did I mention everyone on the island eats breakfast, lunch and dinner together at the same time? It was like camp! (not that I have ever been to camp...)

And that's all folks!

Xo,
C

[Disclaimer: it was the perfect weekend except 2 major fails. I brought my nice camera with all intentions of making this post even more awesome. I brought the battery charger but failed to bring the wall adapter #expatfail. Secondly, I made a point to double check with the resort if there was room in the van for us to bring a guitar. Of course they said no, and once we got to the car there was in fact tons of space for it (not sure Michael forgave me the entire weekend). It was an ask for forgiveness not permission kind of situation. Lesson learned on both fronts.]

The Weekender

Hey all! I'm back.

Cheers to a short week, amiright!?

Weekend recap for your reading pleasure.

We had a productive weekend on the books since we have big plans for the next 4 weekends in a row(!)

(if you are interested in keeping track: this weekend we are taking advantage of the holiday and heading to this small island off Malaysia for some R&R. Next, we are playing host to Michael's parents - absolutely can't wait! - followed by the 4 of us taking a trip to Bali. Just after that Michael is scheduled to be in HK for a week).

Phew! It's amazing how busy we sound, but I promise you this, tropical jungle life here doesn't move all that fast ;)

SO our productive weekend meant cleaning up the apartment, shopping and wedding planning while things were still relatively quiet. Fun stuff.

Friday night was a low-key dinner of satay at the famous Lau Pa Sat. The main hawker is under construction, but the satay stalls fire up and line the entire block at night. Luckily, this fun outdoor street eat is just around the corner from our offices. Perfect spot for a casual Friday night date night after a long work week. (it looks pretty quiet since we were there early, but the place gets crazy packed. In fact there was a stag party gearing up right next to us)

Chicken, beef & prawn satay - zucchini, onion and a rice cake side - peanut sauce for dipping. Tiger Beer from a 'Tiger Girl' is required. (that face, optional)

Hmm have not tried the wings yet...

Saturday we had some old furniture and boxes we needed to take out of the guest room. In classic boy-girl fashion, I was not being helpful enough in 'picking up my side' of the desk for hauling. My feet shuffling and whining quickly led to Michael incredible hulking the entire thing while I ran after him taking pics for the purpose of the blog. You can imagine how well that went over ;)

Next on the list was shopping: wedding tux and business shirts for him. Potential wedding shoes for her.

The trip was a semi-success. The major shopping area in Singapore is Orchard Road. Imagine if all the 5th Ave and Soho shopping in NYC was located in the middle of Times Square (heaven meets hell my friends). 3.5hr later we managed to leave with a few new shirts and shorts for Michael and a bag a macaroons for me. (We will save Michael's heated rant about the complete non-existence of the button-down collar in Asia for another time).

Business on the top, party on the bottom.

The weekend ended with dinner at our favorite KBBQ place in our neighborhood (surprise, surprise) and a little late night concert at home (some of you were lucky enough to get a video of Michael's performance :))

Lastly, I leave you with a little bonus footage from last weekend. (mostly because I feel as if I didn't get enough face time in this post, but also because I skipped last weeks recap).

Is it strange, embarrassing or worrisome that I frequently tell Michael he could totally be a model in a beer ad? :)

Travel research and wedding song planning :)

Have a great week y'all - this is the beach bar where you can find us...

Guest Contributor: Mumbai + Delhi, India

I must say it's a pleasure to finally join the blogosphere (is that what "this" is called?) and I suppose a long time coming. I've avoided the limelight for too long, and after a long week of Cassidy's not-so-gentle "encouragement", I'm pleased to submit to you all this Let's Go East guest edition -- India.

I'll confess that I had North Indian food for the first time three years ago. At the time, Cassidy and I lived three kitty-corner blocks away from the heart of Curry Hill in New York. One night we went out on the limb together. Thirty dollars and two very full bellies later a new tradition, "Indian Lovers Night", was born. Since then India has been on my bucket list.

I got the nod several weeks ago to attend the annual meeting for one my firm's clients in Delhi. Actually, I was the only one that raised my hand. It's a six hour flight even from Singapore, and the food / water poisoning stories can be a bit frightening...as it turns out they may be unavoidable.

In any case, we set a 3 day schedule which put me in Mumbai for 24 hours and Delhi for 48 hours (+ a full Saturday to roam Delhi on my own). I arrived in Mumai after midnight on a Tuesday and the next day was packed full of meetings...but I was able to catch a couple gems out the window of our car:

Immediately outside the armed guarded gates of the Grand Hyatt Bombay -- a sacred cow. These guys literally roam the streets unhindered by the local population that worships them.
A church, I suppose
The local barber
After a whirlwind tour I arrived in Delhi on Wednesday night and was ravenous.

A proper Indian meal -- room service at the Oberoi. Look at that fresh naan..
(Unfortunately) Not pictured: the incredible buffet style meal that my client served the following night. It was outside at athe Delhi Country Club and consisted of a spread 50 metres long with every North India dish I could ever imagine trying. Complete with Indian bread baked in an open faced clay oven. To die for. Apologies for forgetting my camera.

Goooooood morning Delhi!!!! (this early Friday morning nugget is old news to my 7 followers on Instagram)

After a packed Thur / Fri schedule, I finally had a full Saturday to myself to poke around in Delhi. Actually, I had planned to visit the Taj Mahal, a three hour journey by car, on this hot and sunny Delhi morning. Unfortunately I got a bit reckless on Friday night and brushed my teeth with tap water (not bottled water). I awoke at 3am on Saturday morning to a wave of less-than-subtle stomach pangs. At 4am I decided to pull the plug on my impending road trip for fear of what a roadside Indian toilet might look like...

By noon on Saturday I was feeling almost chipper and ventured out to explore Old Delhi. This Rickshaw driver turned out to be the perfect tour guide.

(mine was of the man-powered variety on the right sight of this photo -- over-sized American not pictured here)

This poor rickshaw driver must've had the longest 3 hours in recent memory pulling my weight around

I kid you not, these are eagles. And they are literally everywhere in Old Delhi

Found the winner! She was a good sport...

Purchased some stationary for Cassidy. These are actually wedding invitations...found them a little to late I guess. Ours have already gone out!

A very sizable mosque!

The next Indian Lovers Night will have an air of authenticity. Confession: I got caught up in the moment and spent WAY too much money on a real Saree for Cassidy. Anyone know any Indian gals looking for a bridesmaid? Oh well, this Saree couldn't have found a more perfect match...

I'll leave you all with one final observation which can't be captured in living color like the scenes above. I'm on my way to the Delhi airport late on Saturday night, making small talk with the lively gentleman driver, who asks me:

"Sir, are you married"

"Not yet, but I'm engaged," I inform him.

"Oh, I see. Is it an arranged marriage or a love marriage?" he asks, as serious as can be.

His was an arranged marriage, but you'll be glad to know that he and his wife are now in love.

At that moment I couldn't have been more excited to see Cassidy on the other end of the red-eye I was about to catch on my way back to Singapore.

Until next time,

MRD
